Jakub Surowiec claims victory in the Sopot Catamaran Cup
Jacek Noetzel reports - On May 2nd-3rd, 2017 the Sopot Catamaran Cup regatta was held at the venue of the this years World Championship in August. The regatta was organized by sailing club UKS Navigo under the auspices of the City of Sopot.
On the first day of the regatta, before the races, competitors on their cats took part in a live broadcast with a parade on the famous Sopot Pier. The fans could see everything on the water from the pier and the beach.
For A-class competitors, this was an important test event before the World Championships, and providing an insight into what visitors can expect in August. The conditions were very demanding with big waves from the sea, the wind up to 20 knots and the low temperature were the factors that the competitors had to cope with, among other things, to compete in the three races scheduled on the first day of the regatta
Jakub Surowiec had very strong lead after day one with 3 bullets. On the second day of the regatta the wind dropped to 8-12 knots, but the waves were still large and required the competitors to use the right technique for some very fast wave riding.
With the spectacular backdrop of Sopot, it is wetting all our appetites! Video here
