Europeans @Barcelona: Last Day report by Piet Saarberg

Piet Saarberg was the only one writing reports form Barcelona this past week, so we really appreciate his time for us to have a daily view of what was going on at the 2013 Euros.
Report published in his Vision / Saarberg website: http://www.catamaranparts.nl/news/

"Today was the last day of the EC. It was 10 knots as predicted and this was the situation during racing. The water was still very lively, and did not match the normal conditions as all experienced all week. Racing was started under the black flag again after one recall. Along the coast was the best, also the area of more wavy patterns from different directions but also more wind.

This seems particular for the Barcelona area as on the lay day we visited a small town 40km North were the sea was calm and blue with normal small swell from the south. Our preparation has not been good, we did not use the rudder winglets available as we did not need them in the last 2 big events. We felt that the Vision was more lively in acceleration without them. With the chop this was a miss, we definitely missed speed because of disrupted flow on the sail.

When we tried the calmer sea further out, the wind was less so the result was still no win in speed. After a just trapezing race with no wild things down wind we ended the series. 9 races done with 2 discards, so a full series completed, without many delays apart from the many starts.

Definitely the best salor, Steve Brewin won with the most consistent runner up Andrew Landenberger and the local hero Manuel Calavia 3rd. I lost the old man’s cup, The great grandmaster´s cup to my friend Theo. It should have stopped on Thursday as I had it then, but lost it today with a try to the calmer sea out.

It was a nice tough series as everybody apart from a few had his bad race(s). Now the next big one is the WC in Auckland NZL. February 2014."
