Danish Nationals 2013 - Sadly not much wind for the Danish sailors but they could complete 4 races in calm conditions. Report sent by Steffen Bay.
"The city of Kerteminde is the host of the large dinghy event Sail Extreme. The Dannish A-cat class decided to organize it's class championship here. Eight A-cat sailors participated and had a total of four races, two on Saturday and two on Sunday.
The weak winds both days were a test for both sailors and especially race officers. So it was actually impressive that we Saturday got two races completed. The first race found it's winner as Steffen Bay found a 15 degrees lift on the starboard side of the course on the second upwind leg and finished 2-5 minutes before second Lars Schroeder and number three Thomas Paasch.
After some waiting, the race management found 45 minutes of southerly wind, and managed to start another race. Lars Schroeder had good speed and finished in first place, followed by Thomas Paasch, Steffen Bay and Joergen Hansen, who had improved his performance compared to first race.
Sunday morning started out with heavy fog and no wind. More boat classes choose to leave the regatta, based on a weather forecast promising no improvement. Fortunately, the A-Cat fleet was still intact at 14 o'clock, as the race management send us on the water for more races. During the first race the windward mark was relocated due to a 90 degrees wind shift. During the second race, shortened at the second top mark.
The weak and changing wind was a challenge for many sailors and boats changed positions several times during the race. Joergen Hansen made a bullet in the first race, very closely followed by Lars Schroeder, Steffen Bay and Thomas Paasch. In sundays second and last race, wind was very shifty during the last upwind. Lars Schroeder showed that he had good overview and finished first on the shortened course. Joergen Hansen finished in second and improved Saturday shared fifth place up to an overall third place. Nice come back.
Two days and four races with very challenging and light wind conditions ended with Lars Schroeder as the new Danish National A-cat class champion after Thomas Paach's sovereign number of A-Cat championships since 2006. Steffen Bay was second and Jorgen Hansen finished third."
